Bobwhites in Georgia

Quercus; My makeshift hunting gear

On a recent trip to Georgia with Yolanda, we headed 45 minutes south of the Atlanta airport to a property called Quercus—a 4000 acre estate settled by a Milanese family in the 70s. The estate was amazing—four large, beautifully appointed cabins tucked into the forest, and one amazing restaurant where we took all our meals during our stay. (More on that next week on Yolanda’s Substack.) While Yolanda was there to check out and write about the property, I was selfishly there for one of the things I love the most—quail hunting. The hotel was generous enough to book me a half day hunt at the nearby Big Red Oak Plantation. It was a cool wet morning when I made my way to the shooting preserve—3,000 acres of oaks, pine tress and scrubby brush— the perfect habitat for bobwhite quail.
