Your new summer shoe, the O'Mast director's uniform, and a deep dive into perfect spring scents
Greetings from California, Hudson Ranch in Napa to be specific. We came out west for a couple of reasons—I did a book signing at Faust Haus (my next one is at Boffi in Beverly Hills on April 30 from 6-8pm—let me know in the comments if you’re coming), I wanted to go turkey hunting, and it’s a great stop on our way to Oahu, where we’re heading tomorrow. Last week I promised I’d post pics and give you the link of my new collab with Scarosso—we did a Negroni slipper, a target one, and some really great color combinations. In today’s newsletter, I’m excited to have some great contributors —Eric Twardzik talks to one of my favorite designers, and Reggie Baudin answers a reader’s question about what are good scents for spring. I’ve been getting plenty of dms on what to give for Mother’s Day—what about my cookbook and you cook her a meal out of it?! Or this great Hudson Ranch/Yolo gift box collab?!
MY UNIFORM
By Eric Twardzik
Who wouldn’t want to be Gianluca Migliarotti? As the director of achingly stylish, style-centric documentaries including O’Mast and founder of the bespoke Neapolitan trouser brand Pommella and its casual offshoot PML, Gianluca has one of the coolest CVs in menswear. Unsurprisingly, he’s also a fantastic dresser, pulling off high-risk, high-reward color and texture combinations with aplomb, and wearing tailoring with the ease that most guys wear T-shirts.
Such lessons in style aren’t learned in a day… Nevertheless, we picked Gianluca’s brain for our returning “My Uniform” column, in the hopes that the master behind O’Mast can work a little wisdom into your own routine.
What is your standard color palette, and does it change seasonally?
Green and white for sure. Stone, beige, blue. I tend to like lighter colors or colorful cloth for the warmest season.
When you think of your wardrobe, what are the basics that come to mind first?
The dark navy DB, a must; denim shirts, especially the Western; white trousers in any weight and simple denim.
Share your favorites for the following categories…
Trousers: Pommella and PML!!! or you mean the style? One pleat, cotton or wool in lighter colors.
Knitwear:I love chunky cashmere sweaters to wear only with a t-shirt. Also like the deep v-neck or the crewneck one tone.
Footwear: Alden boots, suede mostly; love all kinds of loafers.
Neckwear: Franco Marino ties!!! Unlined!!
Outerwear: My overcoats from my tailor Ciro Zizolfi; one specific by dear friend Qemal Selimi in Fox cloth; one trench incredibly well made and designed by Coherence.
What's your travel kit?
No kit!! But the navy DB is always with me, with a bunch of different trousers and shirts. black and suede shoes.
What’s your style advice when traveling across different climates?
Not easy…especially if there are some extreme differences. A couple of pieces for both climates. Nothing extreme though.
THE SCENT
By Reggie Baudin
Spring is the season of renewal. It’s when we peek out from under the giant duvet covers, put away the wool overcoats, cashmere scarves and look for something lighter to wear.
Each time we head out of our homes, the spikes in temperature remind us to opt for garments that accommodate these changes. An often overlooked facet is the power of a mesmerizing fragrance.
Although there aren’t set rules as to what fragrances are appropriate for each season, while spring is here it’s best to wear scents that are light, project well, and leave an intoxicating trail. Below are some contenders that have captured my heart and are sure to steal the hearts of those around you.
Attrape-Rêves by Louis Vuitton is an amber floral fragrance that launched in 2018. It was created by legendary perfumer Jacques Cavallier. Although Attrape-Rêves is marketed for women, anyone can wear it. This fragrance features a gorgeous blend of cacao, peony and patchouli, offset by sweet lychee and Turkish rose, and shines bright with hints of ginger and bergamot.
The cacao and patchouli are expertly used to give a seemingly traditional floral fragrance some depth and mystique. You rarely find such an arrangement of notes in one fragrance but it’s the creative risk taking that makes this finished product so memorable. I wore it to a few business meetings last month, and my colleagues and the client inquired about it. The client even sent a follow up days after and mentioned that he purchased the perfume later that week. I was flattered and speechless. If you are looking for a fragrance to add to your collection, look no further. It’s a perfect signature scent.
Hibiscus Mahajád by Maison Crivelli is a unisex fruity, floral fragrance that was released in 2021. Thibaud Crivelli reached deep into his being to create this fragrance; his memories of sipping delightful hibiscus tea in the middle of a gemstone market serve as the inspiration. It was the house’s first extrait de parfum, formulated at 32% concentration in collaboration with renowned perfumer Quentin Bisch. What makes Hibiscus Mahajád so compelling is the counterbalance of strong and sweet; there’s a heady mix of exotic spices and hibiscus that lead to a heart of smokey black tea and Turkish rose that develop into quite a seductive fragrance. With amber and agarwood at the base, these two notes work in harmony to create such a warm and comforting dry down. It’s become one of my go-to fragrances for special occasions, and I am blown away each time. A few sprays work wonders.
